Building a Greener Rexdale Through the SNAP Community Champion Program

by Moses Mwesigwa

Sarah MacKell, Program Manager, TRCA, presents to participants at the Rexdale Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) Commmunity Champions kickoff, November 12th, 2025.

This fall, residents gathered at the Rexdale Community Hub for the kick-off of the Rexdale Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Program (SNAP) Community Champion Program, a community-building initiative supported by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). The event brought together people who care deeply about their neighborhood and want to help make it greener, safer, and more connected.

Sharing Knowledge and Ideas

Participants shared their knowledge of Rexdale and the challenges they face when trying to implement sustainable projects on their own. They explored what could be achieved collectively, with guidance and support from programs like SNAP. Ideas ranged from planting trees and protecting green spaces to creating safer streets and supporting vulnerable residents.

Through these conversations, attendees highlighted both the strengths of the community and opportunities for collaboration. Interactive activities allowed residents to connect with one another and build relationships that will continue throughout the year.

"It's inspiring to see what we can accomplish when we come together. We're not just residents... we're building our community," one participant shared.

Rexdale ranks as Toronto’s most vulnerable neighbourhood under SNAP criteria, underscoring the need for focused sustainability and community-resilience efforts.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Exciting opportunities for residents to get involved include:

  • Spring Tree and Shrub Project

  • Beautiful Native Species Workshop

  • Guided Nature Walk & COVID Memorial Gardening Opening Event

These projects not only help the environment but also provide opportunities to connect with neighbors, learn new skills, and celebrate the community’s collective efforts.

Residents and SNAP program partners are showing that small actions, when done together, can create meaningful change.
